2024 FRA Internship

For 2024, eight scholarships valued at $12,000 each will be awarded to Freedom Rangemen through a competitive application and interview process. The FRA internship includes 3 weeks at the Semester by the Sea campus in Malibu, CA, college credit for 1 or 2 general education courses that can be transferred to your college, an epic cross-country road trip from California to South Carolina hitting a dozen national parks along the way, and ending at the Trail Life USA national headquarters. TLUSA will be hiring a few interns which you are eligible to apply for and attend if hired. Those not part of the TLUSA internship will have additional travel opportunities and home-base out of Dr. Dawson’s home in North Carolina.

Dr. Brian Dawson is the founder of Semester by the Sea as well as the advisor to the Freedom Rangemen Association and Board Member of Trail Life USA. Dr. Dawson will be personally leading this internship and academic classes. He has led over 100 university field trips to national parks over the past 30 years and looks forward to personally disciplining the FRA interns. We will live out the ideals of a Freedom Rangemen and work together to inspire more generations to reach this pinnacle award!

Each day, interns will strengthen their minds, body, and soul through:

  • Study of God’s word together

  • Fun physical fitness competitions and outdoor games

  • Online college classes with in-person discussions and field trips

  • Book studies (see list of books we may get into below)

  • Entrepreneurial hands-on experiences

The $12,000 scholarship includes housing for the summer, all transportation in our nationwide trips, admission to over a dozen national parks, food when we are together in residence, cost of college classes transferrable to over 3000 colleges and universities, and all study materials. We will have access to surfboards, paddle boards, and kayaks in Malibu, but we will want all interns to have a bike with them for trails through the Malibu hills and for excursions in the National Parks. Interns can earn spending and bike money ( up to $3000 each) as part of their internship to cover their personal expenses.

FRA interns will need to provide transportation into Malibu (LAX) and out of the Carolinas at the end of the summer. Interns will also need to provide personal gear for hiking - camping - biking outdoors in the National Parks, and money for personal expenses and food when we are on the road. Interns must be 18 years old by May 1, 2024 and be an active member of a TLUSA troop.
